House of Common Dreams

House of Common Dreams
For Ovidia Yu

Not that it matters what we have been saying
Not that it matters to you
Not that it matters that you are hurting your neighbour
And our planets never circled your young earth

Not that it matters that a child will go blind
In the dimming room you build in its head
Not that it matters that your own life will be read
And someone will find himself ripped out day by day
From the spine of your words
Not that it matters
That there are people without shadows
Or that some day someone will do the same to you

Not that it matters that your cruel love
Is fed to the young in your memories –
The lone girl in the classroom,
The boy on the rusted swing
Not that it matters that you are educated
And you have read it all before,
Met it before in books and long-echoing halls

You know all of these –
The white of evil, the cloak of abuse,
The circle of history that is drawn around you
You know that you will be read one day
And your conscience has to shine brighter than noon
Not that it matters to you now
As you stomp the streets in your midnight boots
In the name of our God
In the name of my family

But I have come to our house of common dreams,
To the shoulders of a building we have grown up on
But I have only just learnt that the end has arrived,
That the plundering and destroying have begun

But I have always thought that you cared,
That is, until I hear your voice march in rank
And then it no longer matters what I hoped to remember,
The jokes that were when once we cackled
On a diverse table.
